“Hello, world!” (to unashamedly borrow from the realms of programming)
I am Ocdt W. Over the next 3 months, I will aim to keep you abreast of our activities and our progress. The students on this course fall in to one of two categories: PRAMS or PODS. The former being individuals who have passed AOSB with caveats and have been allocated a position on this course for some development before attending officer training at Sandhurst. PODS are serving soldiers who have passed Briefing and have been selected for some development before attendance at Main Board. The crux of the programme for both types of students is close to identical, although several elements are also tailored to specific individual needs. The weeks ahead look intense, yet equally rewarding.
I am a PRAM and will mainly provide my thoughts from this viewpoint. there will also be future posts from a POD's perspective.
The first week began, like most courses, with a blend of necessary administration punctuated with tests and lessons. In military fashion we received lessons in ironing, room layouts and were thereafter working away in the nights to maintain the standard for inspection. We are slowly being brought to understand the art of drill and are learning to pay the correct compliments to the various ranks on camp. Initial diagnostic tests, lessons and interviews have been valuable in helping us fix our aims and clarify expectations of the course. Targets are measurable and reflection is key. The lessons are run in an engaging and interactive manner, encouraging collaboration amongst students.
For all of us there is a lot to gain, things to learn and unlearn. The course is designed to make us feel uncomfortable, and there have certainly been a few tests of confidence. Not to fear, we are all 'coffee beans'; more on this later. The week has gone by quickly and with much homework to do, I will see you next week!
